34 True Merit Bowls Later: Culture, Commitment, and the Persistence of Character at Theta Pi
Theta Pi chapter of Alpha Tau Omega wins its 34th True Merit Award. Former Chapter President Kodi reflects on ATO leadership, culture, and campus impact.

When I served as Chapter President of the Theta Pi chapter of Alpha Tau Omega at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, earning the True Merit Award was the defining standard we strove toward every day. Holding that heavy silver True Merit Bowl wasn’t about having a trophy to display on a shelf; it was the tangible validation of late nights, shared sacrifices, rigorous academic standards, and an unwavering commitment to one another and the community.
Receiving the news that Theta Pi has just won its 34th True Merit Award brings back a wave of pride. More than that, it reinforces a fundamental truth about leadership and organizational culture: excellence is never an accident—it is a habit.
More Than a Standard: An Expectation of Hard Work
When a chapter wins an award 34 times, the greatest risk is always complacency. It’s easy for new pledge classes to look at a room full of awards and assume that success is simply handed down as an inheritance.
Hearing the chapter’s current undergraduate leadership reflect on this achievement in their acceptance interview, one statement immediately stood out to me:
"True Merit is not something that we expect to get every year... we put it as an expectation for our guys to where we know we're going to work our butts off for it. Hard work does pay off."
That mindset is precisely why Theta Pi continues to set the bar. True Merit represents the very best of what a fraternity chapter can be: excellence in scholarship, brotherhood, campus leadership, and service. Winning it requires a total rejection of entitlement and an embrace of everyday discipline.
As the current chapter leadership rightly noted, at its core, striving for True Merit is simply living out the ATO Creed: to foster "the recognition of true merit wherever found."
Impact Beyond the Chapter House
True Merit isn't measured solely within the walls of a fraternity house; it’s reflected in how young men impact the broader campus and community.
This past year, the men of Theta Pi extended that impact in extraordinary ways:
Campus Leadership: Members hold key leadership roles across UAH, serving as Student Government Association Vice President, UAH Lancers President, and leading numerous campus organizations. As Dr. Charles Karr, President of UAH, recently put it: “The Taus are the highest standard of excellence that the university can produce.”
Philanthropy at Scale: Through their signature Battle of the Buffalo event, the chapter elevated its service to incredible heights, raising $172,250 for the Clearview Cancer Institute—an increase of over $50,000 from the previous year!
Seeing these young men channel their energy, discipline, and brotherhood into six-figure philanthropic contributions and campus-wide governance proves that the values we built our brotherhood upon remain as strong and relevant today as they were when I was an undergraduate.
Lessons That Last a Lifetime
Looking back from my perspective today, the experience of leading a True Merit chapter shaped how I approach leadership in every facet of my personal and professional life.
The Alpha Tau Omega Creed speaks about binding men together in a brotherhood based upon eternal and immutable principles. Managing a department, coaching a team, or raising a family requires those exact same principles: setting a high standard, supporting the people around you, staying resilient through challenges, and building a culture that endures long after you leave the room.
Congratulations to the undergraduates of Theta Pi on carrying the torch forward and securing their 34th True Merit Bowl. You’ve made every alumnus who helped lay a brick in this chapter's foundation incredibly proud.
